The growth of Technology and AI in health career: why your job is still safe as a nurse

One of the most exciting new frontiers in medicine is the growth of artificial intelligence. From robotic surgeries to AI-powered diagnosis, the impact of technology in the medical world is irrefutable. Contrary to popular belief, it is impossible to replace the human element in the health sector — primarily in nursing — with AI.

Some of the reasons why your job as a nurse is still safe include:

  1. Nursing is an evolving profession

Unlike banking – where AI and automated machines have replaced humans – the nursing profession is ever-growing, and there is something to learn every day. Even with efficiency and zero human error, AI does not have a space for change and self-improvement.

Besides, there is an enormous difference between experienced nurses and nursing graduates. The nursing profession gives nurses a chance to grow and understand the human body in depth. Unfortunately, machines rely on one-time programming with less possibilities of expanding their understanding of the human body and emotions.

  1. Artificial intelligence lacks human empathy

Can technology replace nurses? The answer is NO. Although technology will improve efficiency in systems, it is impossible to create empathy through AI. Thanks to this factor, nursing is one of the few professions that will survive the AI revolution.

Also, a nurse is not just a caregiver. While there are robots that can mimic human behavior and can accomplish necessary tasks, the presence of a physical nurse is unmatched. Apart from monitoring conditions, the small talks between nurses and the patients play a huge role in their healing process.

  1. Only trained nurses can review the effectiveness of a drug or the healing process

Apart from doing basic tasks, nurses are vital in reviewing the effectiveness of a drug and managing the healing process. However, a machine or system cannot access whether the patient is getting better or not. For example, a system cannot tell whether the wound is healing or not without subjecting the patient to endless examinations.

For this reason, the personalization of a patient’s assessment makes nursing an exceptional career choice. Also, conditions and diseases keep changing and relying on systems as a nursing alternative can be expensive due to endless systems’ updates.

  1. AI will create new career opportunities for nurses

Can nurses remain relevant in a technologically advanced future? Yes. In the next five decades, pundits predict a change in how nurses interact with patients. Thanks to AI, remote monitoring will be more efficient. Unlike now, AI will make it possible for nurses and other health professionals to serve patients physically and virtually.

In addition, technology will give nurses a chance to serve patients overseas without leaving their countries. Therefore, AI disruption in the health industry will be a blessing in disguise as far as creating opportunities is concerned.

Conclusion

AI is an empowerment tool in the health sector, rather than a replacement to nurses. Although technology will disrupt the health sector, the changes will only create more chances for trained nurses. Also, artificial intelligence in nursing will redefine competence in this vital sector.
